Impressions from the power plant Boxberg

As part of the celebrations 50th birthday of my mother in law were allowed to participate in future we in a very personal tour of the lignite power plant Boxberg. Both parents of my loved working there, and her father (his character shift leader) led our group through almost all areas of modern power plant. Sorry, may after the turn because of insufficient efficiency and lack of filter technology parts of the old disused power station visitors must not be entered, although we really would have certainly very interested.

For me personally, this plant constitute a special meaning, except that I am at that time to the turn in the so-called political education (compulsory complementary course, had to hold the late afternoon to those who did not have this specialist chosen voluntarily deeply punished with recreational deprivation and homework into the night) a comprehensive presentation on environmental problems in the former GDR and of course also to the production of energy from brown coal have not passed. In the 80 years was Boxberg with a total installed capacity of 3520 megawatts, the largest power station in the East and the largest lignite-fired power plant in Europe.

is after closure of 12 older DDR blocks from the 60s and 70s, with 1,900 MW Boxberg nationally ranked only ninth After completion of the currently under construction, but it is new block R with 2570 MW after all, become number 4 are (behind the two current "leaders" Niederaußem and Jänschwalde and the skyscraper-building in Neurath near Grevenbroich, to go with its two new blocks in spite of various fatal accidents on the "largest construction site in Europe" allegedly still operating in 2010, which this power plant, with a total of 4,400 MW, the undisputed number 1 would be).

The tour of the plant Boxberg was very impressive. However, it is difficult, the huge scale of the facilities to describe someone who has not seen it with my own eyes. Already the turbine hall is huge, but still nothing compared to the building that the combustion chamber with huge houses and almost 160 meters the size of a skyscraper has grown - even if a viewer is estimating the actual amount given the total absence of visible external hard floors. The view from the roof of the main building is certainly breathtaking.

most of its nearly 300 meter high chimneys have been blown up or wear as they were no longer needed for the retrofit of flue gas washing. But now determine the new buildings of the huge block from the 90s or the current construction and their scarcely less massive cooling towers of the image. Currently they are still accompanied by a whole battery of older cooling towers from the time of the GDR, of which, however, also have been some demolition. The view extends far beyond the mines that supply the power needed from the lignite. By a natural landscape can hardly be discussed in this area, which can not conceal the back immigrant wolves.

I would like to show here photos from inside the power plant, but I guess that the operator Vattenfall most probably would have something against it. Against some exterior shots of the power plant and a few views from the roof would probably not be objectionable, however. In addition, there are a few shots from an old switchboard from the early days of the power plant in the power plant's own museum. Since the technology still looked really cute! And there was some truth in fact or as a user can touch. The same Russian components should be way, been used on the space station MIR.

At the end of the article a few spektatuläre photos coming from the lowest part of the combustion chamber, where you can look through a whole battery of timed with special glass doors. In view of these images that seem to rank with a view to the very heart of hell, it is a rather difficult to realize, is that this is in fact only the glowing and burning ash, and that is the actual combustion process, which to generate steam for power generation and thus produces usable energy, more than 100 meters will take place earlier.
